3rd Grade - 5th Grade
The Cathedral-Carmel curriculum is composed of the following subject areas: Catholic Religion, reading, language arts, math, science, social studies, and physical education. In addition to the core curriculum, music, library, technology and fine arts are incorporated throughout the school year. A variety of elective classes are also offered beginning in 5th grade.
Religion - Cathedral-Carmel School is committed to carrying out the three dimensions of educational ministry of the church—announce the message revealed by God which the Church proclaims, build fellowship in the life of the Holy Spirit, and also give service to the Christian community and the entire human community.
Cathedral-Carmel School strives to provide a Christian environment and religious education program that are particularly conducive to the growth of the total child.
Mathematics - Each student actively participates in a learning environment guided by a classroom teacher and supported by the home and community. The student develops mathematical understanding through individual, group, and whole class instruction that includes investigating, discovering, communicating, and reasoning.
Math courses in grades 3-5 are designed to instill an appreciation and knowledge of mathematics and its application to problem solving in everyday life. Each course is designed to integrate math with other disciplines. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards and current state and national standards are implemented into the school curriculum.
English-Language Arts - In grades 3-5, English courses are designed to enhance oral communication skills and to place continued emphasis on writing clearly and effectively. The courses are designed to teach the student how to speak and write in complete, grammatically correct sentences that convey thoughts clearly to others and to increase their knowledge of grammar. Appreciation and understanding of literature is correlated with all areas of Language Arts. The writing process is practiced and extensive units on writing are included.
In grades 3-5, reading courses are designed to teach reading skills through the use of literature. Courses develop literary skills, vocabulary and critical thinking which will prepare students for the tasks they will encounter in junior high courses.
In grades 3-5, spelling courses are designed to enhance basic spelling skills using both phonetic and non-phonetic approaches. Courses help students develop an awareness of spelling options for various vowel and consonant sounds and assist them in utilizing available resources. Current state and national standards in reading and responding, information resources, writing, proofreading, and speaking and listening are integrated into the school curriculum.
Social Studies - In Grades 3-5. social studies courses are divided into standards covering history, civics, economics, and geography. Current state and national standards and benchmarks in geography, civics, economics, and history are integrated into the school curriculum.
Science - In grades 3-5, the science courses are designed to provide an opportunity for all students to become scientifically literate and reflective of the inherent nature of scientific knowledge, methods, and processes. Scientific knowledge is constructed through a hands-on/minds-on approach with overarching concepts that connect the sciences and other disciplines. Current state and national standards and benchmarks in physical science, life science, earth and space science, and science and the environment are integrated into the school curriculum.
