Kindergarten - 2nd Grade

The Cathedral-Carmel curriculum is composed of the following subject areas: Catholic Religion, reading, language arts, math, science, social studies, and physical education. In addition to the core curriculum, music, library, technology and fine arts are incorporated throughout the school year.

Religion - Cathedral-Carmel School is committed to carrying out the three dimensions of educational ministry of the church—announce the message revealed by God which the Church proclaims, build fellowship in the life of the Holy Spirit, and also give service to the Christian community and the entire human community.  Cathedral-Carmel School strives to provide a Christian environment and religious education program that are particularly conducive to the growth of the total child.

Mathematics - Each student actively participates in a learning environment guided by a classroom teacher and supported by the home and school community. The student develops mathematical understanding through individual, group, and whole class instruction that includes investigating, discovering, communicating, and reasoning.

Math courses in grades K-2 are designed to instill an appreciation and knowledge of mathematics and its application to problem solving in everyday life. Courses are designed to integrate math with other disciplines. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards and the current state and national standards are implemented into the school curriculum.

English-Language Arts - English courses in grades K-2 are designed to provide students with skills needed to orally communicate and to write clearly and effectively. Each course is designed to teach the student how to speak and write in complete, grammatical sentences that convey thoughts clearly to others and increase their knowledge of grammar. Instruction in grammar and usage is correlated with other subject areas.

Reading courses in grades K-2 are designed to instill the ability to independently decode and encode words, to comprehend the written message, and to expose students to the many forms of literature and informational text.   This is developed by means of a readiness program and subsequent skill development at each grade level with appropriate correlation with all subjects.

Spelling courses in grades K-2 seek to provide the student with basic spelling skills using both phonetic and whole language (non-phonetic) approaches. The courses are designed to help students develop an awareness of spelling options for various vowel and consonant sounds and assist them in utilizing available resources.  Neat, legible, and attractive handwriting is promoted first as manuscript printing and later as cursive handwriting.  Current state and national standards in reading and responding, information resources, writing, proofreading, and speaking and listening are integrated into the school curriculum.

Social Living - Social Living courses are integrated into the curriculum through thematic units. Various social studies units emphasize knowledge of geography, civics, economics, and history.  Current standards in physical science, life science, earth and space science, and science and the environment are the focus of the integrated science units.
